Abstract
First, I examined how anxiety is understood in psychiatry and neuroscience, focusing on the causes and treatments of panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. Second, I examined how anxiety is understood in philosophy, focusing on Kierkegaard, Heidegger, and Levinas. Third, I have examined how anxiety is understood in theology, focusing on Reinhold Niebuhr’s and Tillich’s understanding of anxiety. Finally, I have critically examined the concept of anxiety, synthesizing and understanding it from the perspectives of psychiatry, neuroscience, philosophy, and theology. Through critical consideration, I tried to say five things. First, I argued that there is a need for an interdisciplinary dialogue with faith and religion beyond the neuro-cognitive paradigm, which seeks to synthesize the substance dualism, which dualizes mind and body, and the materialism of brain-centeredness, and the enactivism, which seeks to go beyond the meaning of internalism that it implies. Second, I argued that if Christians, at least among panic disorder patients, embrace Tillich’s idea that finite human beings are incapable of overcoming anxiety and that the courage of being that comes from faith in God can overcome the threat and anxiety of non-being, and that through participation in Christ we can overcome existential alienation and become new beings, they can be helped to overcome death anxiety and avoidance responses. Third, I argued that medication for anxiety, while effective, is not the answer. Fourth, I argued that even if relaxation and cognitive-behavioral therapies for anxiety are effective, they cannot address deep-seated anxiety, just as they cannot address death anxiety, which is the root of all anxiety. So prayer and the Bible can be used, even if prayer cannot eliminate anxiety in some cases. I also argued that focusing on nature and Jesus-centered mindful breathing help reduce anxiety. Above all, I emphasized that it is love that overcomes anxiety, as 1 John 4:18 says.
