Abstract

The 'Third Humanism' is the background that DongRee Kim had a keen interest in writing historical novel. 'DONGYANGJEONGSIN(oriental thought)' is not only 'third Humanism''s conclusion, but also a keyword representing his historical consciousness. Researchers have said that DongRee Kim's novels present Third World's modernity criticizing 'First World' from the outside, because they only regarded his 'Third Humanism' as a criticism of the western history of civilization. Especially researchers who devalued DongRee Kim's historical novels by reason of popular literature reckoned without the fact that his historical novels had been created under the influence of 'Third Humanism'. DongRee Kim created a series on historical short stories for detection or representation of 'SHILLAHON(SHILLA dynasty's sprit). In result Kim DongRee Historical Novels was published in 1977. The works is a text representing ancient SHILLA epically from the reverse orientalism imagining the East's superiority to the West. To the eye this text aims at return to epical world, but that writing was extremely modern style, novel. Out of this a irony between the pose of transcendentalism to modern times and historical novel as a modern writing form happens. This antinomy is a kind of ambivalence characterizing DongRee Kim' historical novels. There are a contradiction between ancient narrative literature' premodernity and novel's modernity. This approach to modernity in guise makes readers interpret his historical novels as pseudo-transcendental modernism.
