Abstract
This study aimed to examine the impact of theme-based project learning on elementary students’ ecological citizenship. Ecological citizenship was defined through three sub-elements: ecological competence, communication competence, and community competence. The study addressed five themes were selected for the study: horticultural education, recycling education, ecological understanding, energy education, and values education for future generations. Each theme was reconstructed according to achievement standards from the 2015 revised national curriculum in Korean, social studies, science, practical arts, ethics, and creative experiential activities, producing ten project-based learning units. The study was conducted with one fifth-grade class at G Elementary School in S District, Seoul. Pre- and post-tests assessed changes in ecological citizenship, and data were analyzed using the non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Post-test scores showed significant increases across all three sub-elements compared with pre-test scores. Interviews and reflective journals revealed that, compared with before the project, students communicated more actively with peers, developed a stronger sense of community, and enhanced their ecological sensitivity. They also reported adopting a more ecocentric attitude and engaging more frequently in ecological practices. These results confirm that theme-based project learning grounded in the school curriculum can effectively enhance elementary students’ ecological citizenship. Beyond acquiring ecological knowledge, students could reflect on the relationship between humans and nature, internalize communal responsibility, and cultivate global citizenship—key contribution of this study. This research demonstrates the feasibility of ecological citizenship education in schools and underscores the need to expand its implementation across regions and grade levels as a model for preparing students for a sustainable future.
