닐 포스트먼의 테크놀로지적 마인드셋에 대한 비평과 ‘인간성 향상’을 위한 교육

21세기에 접어들며 인터넷을 비롯한 정보 테크놀로지 분야의 선진 강국이 된 한국은 테크놀로지의 발달에 기초한 물질적 풍요로움과 고도로 전문화되고 세분화된 삶으로 인해 서로에 대해 무관심하고 타인을 덜 이해하면서 공동체 의식의 상실을 경험하고 있다. 이러한 상황에서 현대사회 테크놀로지의 발달과 그것이 인간의 정신과 도덕적 가치에 미치는 영향에 대해 깊은 관심을 가졌던 미국의 문명 비평가이자 교육학자였던 닐 포스트먼(1931-2003)의 사상을 살펴보는 것은 의미 있는 연구가 될 것이다. 포스트먼은 테크놀로지가 제공하는 생활의 편리와 윤택함에도 불구하고 그것의 ‘통제되지 않은 성장’은 인간의 마음과 정신적 활동을 지배하면서 ‘테크놀로지적 마인드셋’을 형성하였고 그것은 인간성의 상실을 가져왔다고 경고했다. 이러한 테크놀로지적 마인드셋을 극복하기 위한 해결책으로 포스트먼은 인간성 향상 교육을 제안하였다. 따라서 본 연구는 포스트먼이 염려한 테크놀로지적 마인드셋의 특성을 도출하고, 테크놀로지의 발달이 문화와 인간의 정신에 미친 해악을 극복하기 위한 방안으로 그가 제시한 교육을 검토할 것이다. 더 나아가 포스트먼이 제안한 해결책이 오늘날의 한국교육에 줄 수 있는 시사점을 논의할 것이다.
Abstract
While Korea has recently become a developed country in the field of information technology, including the internet, Koreans undergo profound segmentation and specialization of modern life, thus more and more experiencing a loss of community. The triumph of technology in Korea has influenced not only its society in general but also, more importantly, its people’s mind. Koreans now care less, know less about each other, and have less in common as fellowmen. In this circumstance, an influential cultural critic and educator Neil Postman(1931-2003) and his works which deeply focused on the influence of modern technology on the humans’ mind and moral values, would be of great relevance. Postman argued that although technology provides convenience and abundance in life, uncontrolled growth of technology overrules the human mind and heart, thus building a technological mind-set that has brought about the loss of humanity. As a solution for overcoming the technological mind-set, Postman emphasized on the role of education. Specifically, he suggested that schools should help students to become a ‘technological resistance fighter’ that will ultimately lead to ‘the ascent of humanity.’ Therefore, this study investigates the characteristics of a ‘technological mind-set’ for Postman, and then examines the education that he presented in ways to overcome the harmful influence of technology on both the individual mind and society. Furthermore, the study discusses what implication Postman’s solution might have in Korean education today.
