Abstract
This study aims to analyze the involvement of the Buddhist community in the Rohingya crisis and its justifications, noting the contradictory nature of the Buddhist community’s involvement in violent human rights violations against ethnic minorities and other religions in Myanmar, a country with a Buddhist-centered culture. A thorough literature review was conducted to analyze the complex factors surrounding the crisis and the role of Buddhist groups. The anti-Muslim nationalism of Mabatha, a monastic organization that participated in the violence against the Rohingya, is particularly concerning. In contrast, Mahana’s response to Mabatha highlights the political mobilization of Myanmar's Sangha. Although Mahana has been a silent contributor, they are ultimately a political organization working towards gaining political power, which explains the contradictions and justifications in their actions.
