Abstract
The purpose of this article is to explore the Buddhist ethno-fundamentalist movement that unfolds in Myanmar and Sri Lanka through MaBaTha and Bodu Bala Sena, and to predict the future of fundamentalism as its social and religious significance and social movement. In detail, it analyzes the two aspects that internal and external dynamics. The two groups have emerged in a common environment where Muslim dominance of commercial rights, a rise in the number of Muslims domestically, political turmoil ended, and individual freedom and expression were guaranteed. The two countries also have failed to integrate the divided society caused by British colonial rule since independence, and Buddhism has become the only tool of politics. But in Sri Lanka’s case, because it has been under outside aggression and interference beyond the protection of Buddhism since its establishment, which has led to monks becoming the main agents of social reform or organizing political parties to actively participate in real politics. Myanmar, on the other hand, had no reform of Buddhism even during the British era, and the state had restricted the political autonomy of monks, controlling the sangha in the military rule. In conclusion, given the long history of politicized sangha intervening in the world to protect Buddhism from outside threats, the lack of central religious authorities to control each Buddhist sect has allowed competition among monks, and the high social tolerance of monks’ participation in society, it is more likely that Buddhism fundamentalism will remain a lasting religious and social movement in Sri Lanka than in Myanmar.
