근대교육 형성의 동아시아적 특질에 관한 시론적 고찰: 일본근대교육의 특질을 중심으로

일본, 대만, 한국 등 동아시아의 근대교육에는 서구의 그것과는 다른 역사사회적 특질이 존재한다는 전제 위에서, 그것을 밝히기 위해 일본 근대교육의 특질을 다룬 연구들을 리뷰하고 그로부터 동아시아 근대교육의 특질에 관한 시사를 도출한다. 서구에서의 근대교육체제, 즉 국가교육체제는 산업혁명 이후 제 사회계급ㆍ계층 간의 지위경쟁 과정이 빚어낸 ‘의도되지 않은 결과’로 창출된 측면이 강한 반면, 일본의 그것은 후발 자본주의 국가의 ‘따라잡기’ 근대화 전략의 일환으로 국가에 의해 위로부터 구상 되고 합목적적으로 만들어진 ‘의도된 결과’의 측면이 강했다. 국가는 근대적인 학교교육을 국민ㆍ인력 만들기 및 엘리트 양성의 장치로 효과적으로 활용하기 위해 그에의 접근 기회를 범계층적으로 개방했 다. 또한 근대 일본의 교육과정은 서구의 그것과는 달리 특정한 사회계급ㆍ계층문화의 관련성이 희박했고 그런 만큼 그것의 내면화 과정에서 계층적 장벽은 존재하지 않았다. 학교교육에의 접근 기회가 수평적으로 개방되고 동시에 객관적인 학력(學力) 경쟁을 통해 취득되는 학력(學歷)에 따라 사회적 지위와 보상이 수직적으로 현격히 달라지는 체제가 일본형 메리토크라시의 특질이다. 일본형 메리토크라 시 및 일본형 학급제나 교육형식 등, 일본적 근대교육 모델은 20세기 전반에 일본제국의 식민지 지배 상황에서 동아시아의 다른 사회로 파급되어 가면서 동아시아 근대교육의 특질을 형성시키게 되었다
Abstract
Main theme of this paper is the East-Asian characteristics of the formation of modern education. In order to approach to those characteristics, critical reviewing of major researches on the formation of Japanese modern educational system and the several characteristics of it is carried in this paper. In modern era, Japanese government has started the major projects of making modern educational system under the strategy of ‘catching-up’of Western societies. As the ‘intended consequences’ of that projects, Japanese model of modern education had possessed its own characteristics different from those of Western modern education. Several aspects such as open and egalitarian aspects of ladder-like school system and the neutral characteristics of school curriculum independent from dominant class culture, enormous effects of educational credentials on the attainment of social status bring peculiar characteristics to the formation of Japanese meritocracy and appearances of so called ‘academically qualified elites’in Japan. On the one hand, Japanese modern education developed its own educational forms such as ‘community-oriented class system’or ‘generalist-oriented teacher’s culture’. In the modern era of East Asian worlds, the Japanese model of modern education began to put influences on the modern educational reformations of societies such as Korea or China. Under the colonial dominations of Japanese empire on the Taiwan or Korea, the Japanese model of modern education had been transplanted into the colonized societies unilaterally. And the post-colonial legacy of that Japanese model has been maintained at least partially in the educational worlds of Taiwan or Korea even after the liberation from colonial rules. As the results of those complicated historical processes occurred during the modern era, the hypothesis that the East-Asian characteristics of modern education might have been established can be probable and from now on, that hypothesis should be verified through positive and historical researches
