초록

In this study the focus is on the text Die Verdwaalde Land (1992) by the Coloured author Abraham Phillips. The publication of this text at the end of the Apartheid era was particularly significant for South African society and that a book by an author exhibiting little of the conspicuous skill of the typical Afrikaans writer appeared, was a significant literary event. That the marginalised ethnic community’s voice is heard in the text also facilitates approaching the text from an auto-ethnographic perspective. Auto- ethnography, meaning ethnography that forms part of autobiographical writing (cf. Hanson, 2004:184), aims to create discursive space in which the autobiographer may be positioned as a subject, and within which the auto-ethnographer may relate aspects of his/her own experiences as part of a particular ethnic group or community. In the process of such self-(re)presentation by the autobiographer, the strategic objective with regard to the politics of identity is displayed. In such a case, identity politics may be understood in the context of activity towards empowerment of a specific group’s identity. Since it may frequently be seen as a claim for redistribution of political power, identity politics may affect the inclusion as well as exclusion of a group within the wider community. What Phillips attempts to achieve in and through his auto-ethnographic text, is investigated here against this background. Not identity politics only but also auto-ethnographic resistance to political ideologies (against apartheid) come to the fore in the text. The reader of this book, which came into existence in the time of the political turn-around, cannot deny its socio-political effect. In the Phillips text, the voice of the formerly marginalised (the Other) is positioned as an agent encouraging change in the community.
