초록
This article approaches A.H.M. Scholtz's Vatmaar (1995) as an auto- biographical text. In the postapartheid atmosphere, the South African literary world pays more attention to the historically marginalized people. In this context Vatmaar can be regarded as a meaningful contribution to the South African society as it offers autobiographical storytelling of the people who's voices were silenced before in the Afrikaans literature. Through the rewriting of history, culture and ethnic identity from the perspective of the subject (or insider), Vatmaar functions as an illustration of auto-ethnography: Auto-ethnography aims to construct a space where the autobiographer can be situated as a subject in the representation of his life, and where the auto-ethnographer can express himself through his own social-cultural perspective. The story of Vatmaar is based on Scholtz's own experience during the 1920's. The past in this text plays a role of a mirror where the future can be reflected: the author represents an ideal space of utopian hybridity where the various cultural and ethnic identities could be included. In such a way, he ultimately proposes a heterogeneous and heterotopical social model at the historical moment when such a representation is needed more than ever.
