Abstract
This study analyzes the changing patterns of community in rural Jeju societies during the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. Based on survey data collected approximately 20 years apart – in 1986 and 2004 – from eight of the same villages, this study explores the changes in Jeju's rural society over that period. It focuses on changes in the sense of community, along with the community rootedness and the demographic-social factors that influenced villagers’ sense of community. Principal component analysis results indicate that a sense of community is composed of two factors: ‘relational involvement’ and ‘emotional bond’. During the turn of the century, one of the elements of the sense of community, relational involvement, was somewhat weakened, while there was no significant change in another element, emotional bond, in rural Jeju villages. The effects of demographic-social and community rootedness factors also appeared differently on the two elements of the sense of community. Regarding relational involvement, marital status, agriculture and fisheries, and land use had an influence in both 1986 and 2004. Land ownership, standard of living, and place of birth and growth, which were significant in 1986, lost their influences in 2004. Annual income and residency period has no influence in 1986 but became influential in 2004. For emotional bond, in-village marriage was influential in both 1986 and 2004. Factors such as age, agriculture and fisheries, residency period, and nearby marriage had no effect in 1986 but were found to have an effect in 2004. Conversely, the effects of marital status and place of birth and growth, which were present in 1986, disappeared in 2004. Despite the upheaval during the turn of the century, rural Jeju villages showed a slight weakening in relational involvement aspect of the sense of community, but the emotional bond aspect remained unwavering. The effect of community rootedness factors on the sense of community in Jeju's rural villagers seems to have grown stronger during the turn of the century. We hope that this study will contribute to future research on rural villages and communities.
