Abstract

The study offers an analysis of the first movement of Carter’s last piece, Epigram (2012), specially focusing on his harmonic progressions. Carter’s Harmony Book published in 2002 clarifies the logic behind his choice and his concepts of harmony and also provides an deep insight into his compositional process. After short review of the varied theoretical and analytical literature relevant to Carter’s harmony, I attempt to show the diverse and distinctive aspects of Carter’s harmonic language specially emerged in his later works. Most of all, Carter’s source sets- two all-interval tetrachords (AIT)[0146] and [0137] and the all-trichord hexachord [012478]-has been used as ‘key’ chords.Another source chord, spatial sets or fixed-register pcsets, also plays a significant role in his later works. The objective of this analysis of the first movement of Carter’s, Epigram is not only to show how he makes use of his unique harmonic structure and also to reveal what the new features of harmonic language in his last piece. The analysis of Carter’s, last work, Epigram, explains how he has realized his notions of harmony and his musical idea that favors an integration including variety, thus creating a balanced design.
