Abstract

There has been controversy regarding the original performance date of Sophocles’ Ajax. The approximated date spans from 460 BC to 410 BC. There has also been controversy over what Ajax symbolizes; some argue that it symbolized the island of Aegina, which was struggling against Athens at the time, while others saw it as symbolizing Cimon or Alcibiades in Ajax. This paper first tries to clarify what Ajax could symbolize under the circumstances in Athens, and thus, the date when Ajax of Sophocles was first performed. Firstly, I argue that the character Ajax symbolized Themistocles. Both were once regarded as saviors of Greece: Ajax saved the Greeks from the threat of Hector of Troy, while Themistocles was regarded as the most distinguished man who protected Greece from the Persian attack. They were both known to have committed the sin of arrogance and both took their own lives. Above all, both were deeply connected to the island of Salamis: Ajax was the representative hero from Salamis and Themistocles was the hero of the Salamis Sea Battle, while the chorus of the play consisted of the sailors from Salamis. Secondly, in these contexts, the play was performed not long after the year Themistocles’ committed suicide, which is estimated to be around 459 BC. This date fits with the anti-Spartan mood of the play, since there had been antagonism between both anti- and pro-Spartan parties in Athens; the pro- Spartan party stepped down while the anti-Spartan party lead by the friends of Themistocles became predominant around this time. This date also fits with the style of the play such as the absence of a third actor. In addition, it properly explains Libanius’ ‘mysterious’ comment that the effect of Ajax was the same as Phrynichus’ The Capture of Miletus. If the audience had been moved to tears by Phrynichus’ tragedy, “for reminding familiar misfortunes”, then the suicidal incident of Ajax in the play might have reminded the Athenians watching the play of a very familiar person’s suicide: that of Themistocles.
