Abstract

Focusing on Sophocles' Ajax and Euripides' Heracles, this paper investigates how Ajax and Heracles are reshaped and remodeled as tragic heroes who differ from the hero found in traditional myth. Furthermore, it confirms the change of the concept of aretē by comparing the two modes of aretē of Ajax and Heracles. After having slaughtered the herd of cattle in a state of madness, Ajax refuses to accept sōphrosyne based on the principle of change and commits suicide in order to confirm his heroic aretē. But this aretē can be seen as his negation of democratic and community value and as aristocratic and self-sufficient aretē. This kind of aretē moves us to admire Ajax with awe and to view him as an object of worship. Heracles, seized by madness brought on by the goddess Hera, slaughtered his wife and children. When he comes to his senses, he decides to kill himself, but after having a conversation with Theseus and reflecting on the situation,he refuses to commit suicide, thus representing the nobility by which he endures the disaster and suffers from it. This representation means his transformation of possessing inner aretē by reconstructing his past aretē by means of sōphrosyne. This leads us to transcend the emotion of pity and fear and to experience sublimity. In addition, Heracles' refusal to kill himself reflects his learning to practice community value and democratic aretē. That is to say, Heracles is reshaped and remolded as an Athenian hero in the cast. In conclusion, the comparison of the two modes of aretē after which Ajax and Heracles strive enables us to confirm the radical change of the concept of aretē.
