Abstract
Felice Beato (1832–1909) was a pioneering war photographer who documented key conflicts during the 19th-century expansion of Western imperialism into the East. This study examines his post-battle photographs taken inside fortresses, reconstructing the sequence of shots and verifying the repositioning of corpses and objects through comparative image analysis. The findings reveal that these photographs were not mere records but staged compositions shaped by imperial perspectives and commercial intent. Employing Jonathan Crary’s theory of the observer and W. J. T. Mitchell’s discourse on imperialism, the study interprets Beato’s images as visual representations produced at the intersection of imperial power and the photographer’s personal ambition for recognition. In particular, his Shinmiyangyo photographs, taken before Korea’s adoption of photography, hold historiographical and archival significance. Among them, one image containing accidental fragments prior to staging offers new evidence and interpretive possibilities for future research.
