초록

This study examines Japan’s early colonial documentation strategies toward Korea by analyzing the photographic records of Kawada Kiichi and Hayashi Takeichi. Kawada’s photographs of the 1876 Treaty of Ganghwa visually document the treaty enforcement process while systematically capturing Korea’s geographical features and defensive structures. Hayashi’s photographs, meanwhile, were intended to accumulate and disseminate visual and textual knowledge of Korea, thereby reinforcing Japan’s colonial ambitions. These images functioned not merely as historical records, but as state instruments aligned with Japan’s military and administrative interests. These two bodies of work marked the beginning of Japanese photographers’ documentation strategy—a strategy that would continue and evolve throughout the colonial period.
