The purpose of this paper is to explore issues related to the translation of ‘cultural specific items’ in Korean-Chinese literary texts under the premise of considering the translator's subjectivity and, in particular, to explore strategies for solving non-equivalent problems in translating Korean literary texts from the perspectives of intercultural understanding. In order to discuss the relevance of cultural studies in translation and intercultural understanding of Korean culture, this paper focuses on the concept of ‘cultural specific items’, which serves as both a reflection of a culture’s unique characteristics and as an indicator of cultural differences during translation. In Chapter 2, this paper investigates how translation strategies for cultural specific items can be developed with the approach of an intercultural understanding of Korean culture. Additionally, based on the research results, this paper provides a theoretical and practical framework to deal with inequivalence of cultural specific items for translators with an intercultural approach. In Chapter 3, the study analyzes the cultural specific items in the Korean novel Simple Sincerity and the translation approaches employed in its Chinese version. Finally, this paper proposes new strategies for translating cultural specific items. We hope that the study offers significant insights for those who aim to translate Korean literature and engage deeply with intercultural understanding.
