Abstract

This study aimed to improve pre-service early childhood teachers’ ability to effectively implement movement education based on play by redesigning the course as a PBL (Problem-Based Learning) activity incorporating design thinking. The participants were 14 pre-service early childhood teachers and one instructor enrolled in a movement education course at a junior college located in B City. The study was conducted as an action research project, following the self-reflective spiral model proposed by Kemmis and McTaggart (2007). The results showed that as the course progressed from activity-centered to play-centered learning, the participants’ understanding of movement education improved. Through PBL activities, they enhanced their problem-solving abilities in collaborative inquiry processes. Additionally, the integration of design thinking helped them better understand the complex contexts of early childhood education settings and strengthened their capacity to flexibly support movement play based on children’s needs. To examine the effectiveness of the course, pre- and post-surveys were conducted on movement teaching efficacy, attitudes toward movement instruction, and problem-solving abilities. Statistically significant improvements were found in all three areas. These findings suggest that a problem-based approach to movement education can effectively foster practical teaching competencies in pre-service early childhood teachers.
