Abstract
This paper analyses the issues of the paradox between love and curse in Shepard’s Buried Child. From Shepard’s point of view, it analyzes the family identity by looking into his other works. Sam Shepard is off-off Broadway’s successful writer, also has received Obie awards and won the Pulitzer Prize. To some degree Shepard tends to dramatize the relations between destructed American family and American dream. Buried Child is one of Shepard’s most successful works and represents modern American family life. There are love and curse between a husband and a wife, a father and a son, and between brothers in this play. The perverted American dream offers the characters to rationalize their violence, alcoholics and incest. The American dream is no longer the honest ideal for modern Americans in a capitalistic society. And Shepard’s works reveals his negative vision of modern American society. Throughout this play, Shepard criticizes modern American society where materialism is rife. The studies on finding reconciliation, forgiveness and conscience in his works will be need.
