Abstract
Mythic Archetypes in Sam Shepard'sBuried ChildYim, Hark-soonSome critics believe that the family in Buried Child is a metaphor for society and that the disintegration of the family is a metaphor for American culture. With this limited, social-cultural approach, it is very difficult to uncover the mythic meaning encoded in the play, which is necessary to get to the totality and universality of the play. Some critics have shown their efforts to interpret the play in terms of myth, but some of their works are far from the play itself and show the critics' own distortion or limited understanding of the text. This study uncovers the mythic archetypes and structures hidden in the play and articulates how those myths--Oedipus myth, Osiris myth, quest--and other mythic elements are encoded in the play.
