Abstract

A Study on the Mythical and Ritual Elements in Buried Child This study examines the characteristic of Shepard's stage in Buried Child. Like Artaud, who longs for the Theatre of Cruelty, Shepard tries to create a total theater that appeals to all the senses, beyond reach of the spoken language. As Artaud emphasizes, Shepard tries to reveal the unconsciousness of human's innate evils that are uncovered and hidden. In Buried Child, Shepard uses dramatic techniques such as myth, rituals, violence, audio visual effects and various experimental artistic methods. This paper is divided into three sections: the theory of Artaud, myth and ritual. Ancient myths play an important part in our understanding of our unconscious selves. In particular, Buried Child is based on the Oedipus myth, which is expressed through the ritual elements dramatically. If the Greek myth is brought to bear on Shepard's modern play, the sudden fertility of the field behind Dodge's house symbolizes not the apparent death of the family, but its continuity through the resurrection of the buried child. In the final scene of this play, with the body of the buried child, a mythic pattern of death, fertility and resurrection is shown reinforcing the ritual. Besides the repetitive activities, such as the funeral ceremony, violence works as powerful imagery attacking audience's sensibilities. Shepard effectively expresses his theme of identity through myth and ritual, based on Artaud
