세계사로 본 이슬람사와 반서구중심주의: 마셜 호지슨을 중심으로

본 논문은 마셜 호지슨의 새로운 세계사연구방법론과 이슬람사에 대한 반서구중심주의적인 새로운 해석을 다룬다. 호지슨의 세계사에 대한 인식은 1940년대 초부터 1968년까지 4반세기를 거치면서 체계화되었다. 서구 이외의 다른 세계사를 서구중심주의적 입장에서 벗어나 세계 전체 입장에서 다시 볼 필요가 있다는 생각이 호지슨의 반서구중심주의적 세계사 접근의 출발점이 되었다. 호지슨의 세계사연구는 문명연구 접근방법에 근거하고 있다. 그는 기존 문명론과 다르게 문화와 문명은 정체되지 않고 끊임없이 역동적으로 변화하고, 이슬람문명은 이슬람적 이상을 공유함으로써 통일성을 지닌다고 보았다. 호지슨은 기존문명연구를 비판하면서 시작했지만 문화주의, 엘리트주의, 본질주의라는 한계를 근본적으로 탈피하지 못했다. 호지슨은 전통과 근대라는 이분법을 대체하기 위해 ‘농경시대’와 ‘기술주의’라는 막스 베버식 ‘이념형’ 개념을 사용하였다. 호지슨의 새로운 세계사 연구전략은 ‘하나의 거대한 역사복합체’로 ‘아프로-유라시아 사회’를 상정하고, ‘반구적 간지역적 접근(hemisphere interregional)’이라는 새로운 세계사 연구방법론을 제창하였다호지슨 세계사 저술의 중요한 초점은 서구의 역사를 세계사의 맥락 속에서 재평가하여, 서구의 역사를 유럽중심주의적 목적론에서 벗어나게 하려는 것이었다. 동시에 호지슨은 이슬람사를 그 자체 내부에서가 아니라 세계사적 맥락에서 파악하려고 했다는 점에서 큰 기여를 하였다.
Abstract
This paper examines Marshall Hodgson’s rethinking Islamic history in a global context and his anti Euro-centrism. He is the most influential American historian of Islam due to his Venture of Islam: Conscience and History in a World Civilization that has radically reconsidered the study of the Civilization of Muslims. His works on world history was rediscovered and published by Edmund Burke III. Hodgson’s papers and books were a precursor to the modern world history approach. He was dissatisfied with the prevailing Euro-centrism and had tried to place Islamic history in a wider global context. Central to Hodgson’s method of doing world history is his use of ideal types of Max Weber. He developed ideal type of ‘Agrarian age’ and ‘Technicalism’ to replace the tradition/modernity dichotomy. Key words : Marshall Hodgson, World history, Euro-centrism, Islamic history, Civilization He thought that ‘the Great Western Transmutation’ of modern Europe was the end-product of millennia-long evolutionary development in Eurasian society. So ‘modernity’ could have originated somewhere else unlike Max Weber and Sung China in the 12th century was close to an industrial revolution. So he denied original western exceptionalism.
