Abstract

This study begins with Russell W. Belk’s (1945 – ) concept of the “extended self,” examining the relationship between self and possession, and explores how this relationship transforms when applied to spatial ownership. To this end, the researcher situates the self – possession relationship within the framework of space – ownership and experience – self, and interprets the mechanism of self-expansion through experience from the perspective of the 19th-century flâneur who wandered through urban space. Meanwhile, contemporary digital media exhibitions are evolving into immersive media forms such as virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality, where audiences encounter artworks as environmental experiences mediated by digital imagery within physical spaces. This mode of viewing — through movement and walking—reveals a strong resemblance to the flâneur’s experiential practice. Accordingly, this study defines today’s exhibition viewer as a “digital flâneur” and connects the act of walking through exhibition spaces with new forms of spatial possession and self-experience. Building on this framework, the study analyzes the audience’s spatial experience through exhibitions utilizing CAVE(Cave Automatic Virtual Environment) technology and investigates how such technological environments enable new modes of digital spatial ownership and self-extension, ultimately seeking possibilities to bridge the disconnection between real and virtual spaces.
