On the Purpose of Building the First Roman Colony: Ostia Kim, Chang Sung Recently it became possible to reevaluate positively the regal period of the Roman history based on the plentiful data of the archaeological researches. In this paper I focused on the first colonization realized at the mouth of the Tiber. Against the evident materials of the traditions, there was a trend of denying the existence of the sea port there in the regal period. But the Italian scholars, especially F. Coarelli contributed the decisive evidences relating to the Forum Boarium, which showed the interconnections between the inner mountainous part of the Italian peninsula and the sea shores and islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea along the river. In this point it is necessary to reexamine the tradition relating to the existence of the first colony called Ostia. Until now the decisive relics were not discovered by the archaeologists but the natural conditions and navigational situations help us to conjecture that there was an interconnection between the city of Rome and the overseas areas with the evidence of the Viraghi bronze and the tesserae hospitales. The difficulties of sailing against the river could be overcome by the ship with fifty oars and the Roman could travel from the city of Rome to Delphi with the ship. With this potential evidence I can conclude the Roman could utilize the merit of the geographical situation of the city at least from the later regal period. In this respect Ostia was essential place composing the overseas network of Rome and had a different purpose from the Greek colony aiming at the real independence.
