초록

First, I want to make it clear that the following is my personal opinion. There may surely be some different views on this topic. Looking back on the Korean studies of the western ancient history, we can verify that there had been quite a great change. The first article of the Western History Review (西洋史論) vol. I (1958) was “An Understanding of Herodotus” by Cho, Eui-Sul. And ten years after that, Yang, Byung-Woo majoring in Greek History said that he is concerned about the scarcity of Roman articles on account of unbalance in numbers of Greek and Roman scholars. At first, in the western ancient studies in Korea, the Greek circle had relatively more scholars than the Roman circle (Greek circle 3 persons, Roman circle just one in number). However, after about 50 years in another review article(2005) on the historical studies in Korea during 2003-2004, Song, Moon-Hyun, another Greek historian, said that the number of Greek articles had been limited to very small amount, compared to those of Roman History. During the last 50 years the numbers of scholars majoring in Greek and Roman history, are respectively 16 and 36. Even the changes of studying trends and of subjects are particularly apparent lately. In the earlier stage the studies oriented toward the socioeconomic and the political history of institutions was the main stream. But Prof. Song said in his review article that during the years of 2004-2005,when lots of articles concerning varieties of religions were presented, the researches treating socio-economic history were very few. In this paper I will look over retrospectively how western ancient historical studies have developed in Korea and present my opinion on the future of studies. Now the Korean Association for the Western Ancient History and Culture(韓國西洋古代 歷史文化學會) has about 50 scholars as its regular members. But I will review some books and articles written by some scholars who had different views on the topics mentioned here. I could not deal with all scholars and their studies in this paper, and even though I did not mention some of them here, that does not in anyway mean that I evaluate their work unimportant. I attached all members’ doctorial or master thesis lists at the end. With this provided, the readers can see the topics in which Korean scholars were interested.

Abstract

First, I want to make it clear that the following is my personal opinion. There may surely be some different views on this topic. Looking back on the Korean studies of the western ancient history, we can verify that there had been quite a great change. The first article of the Western History Review (西洋史論) vol. In this paper I will look over retrospectively how western ancient historical studies have developed in Korea and present my opinion on the future of studies. Now the Korean Association for the Western Ancient History and Culture(韓國西洋古代 歷史文化學會) has about 50 scholars as its regular members.
