Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze color red, which appears repeatedly in Louise Bourgeois’ works, from the perspective of Abject art. Methods of this study are reference research and analysis on Abject art and works of Bourgeois. In dichotomized late modern value systems, women belonged to the passive minority group and have been regarded as the subject of reproduction rather than the independent creator throughout art history. Women artists finally began to express their own thoughts and experiences in their own way entering modern times. The concept of abject was developed by Julia Kristeva. She reinstated the position of the mother, which was of little importance in the mainstream of psychoanalysis, and she convinced many to reconsider about the existence of females. The abject is the subject that is to be thrown out of the boundaries to make the subject itself more sustained. Phenomenon such as this is viewed as abjection. Abjects are mainly things that deviate from their original realm and are considered harmful to the subject and cause fear. Many female artists introduced the concepts of abject and used them in their artworks. This is called abject art. It goes far beyond boundaries and demonstrates the conflicting feelings of fear and attraction at the same time by visualizing the filthy and horrible objects. Abjects have been expressed in their own ways that differ from what mainstream artists have done before. At this time, color red, which is the color of blood and most familiar color in human life, was frequently used by many artists to create a strong visual effect. Bourgeois was an artist who used variety of medium and created various sizes of workpieces on sexuality, love, maternity and paternity based on her experiences. Color red was revealed repeatedly in her works. In conclusion, color red shown in Bourgeois’ work is not only the color of blood, but the means for intensifying visualization to express the abject. With the effect of red color used by Bourgeois, viewers can understand and empathize with the works even more.
