Abstract
This study deals with the emotions of <Kiki Smith> from the perspective of <Abject Art>. Emotion is one of key words in the modern society. The field of philosophy began studying the following in the 1980s in depth: emotions and perceptions; emotions and rationality. One important thing is that the time when Julia Kristeva, a psychoanalyst of the 1980s, mentioned the concept of 'abjection' matches the time when <Abject Art> was first created. The reason it is significant is because one of the things that <object art> pursued is resistance to beautiful emotions, which are universally experienced by all people. Regarding <Abject Art>, Sigmund Freud stated in <Civilization and Its Discontents, 1930> that “Civilization suppresses prone body, anus, and olfactory sense, but it also gives a privilege to upright body, genitals, and vision." Therefore, <Abject Art> can disrupt the order of a civilized society by showcasing anus and stool, which are disgusting to people. However, <Abject Art> has both positive and negative aspects. As for the latter, it has elements that are disgusting, blunt, and cause people to raise an eyebrow. Therefore, the art obviously has aspects that fail to attract the attention of viewers. On the positive side, however, it is such a contrast to modern art, which tends to excessively focus on works that have meanings, objectives, and values. But such values are artificial, in other words, defined by humans. However, <Abject Art> makes it valuable and significant to reflect on meaningless or unattractive things. To study the emotions of <Kiki Smith> from the perspective of <Abject Art>, this study examined the concept of object discussed by a French psychoanalyst named Julia Kristeva, the views of Hal Fosteron <Abject Art>, and trauma and anxiety discussed by Sigmund Freud. The research findings are as follows. When the pleasure of defecation experienced by anal stage children, which is mentioned in Freud's psychoanalysis, was analyzed in comparison of Kiki Smith's <Train>, it was revealed that defecation represents feelings of relief after the main character eliminates the source of uneasy tension. Also, Smith thought a lot about how psychological problems can be solved through physical actions. Thus, invisible areas (psychological anxiety) and visible areas (feelings of guilt for actions) can be interpreted through an identical concept. Therefore, the fact that this study has explored the emotions of humans partially acknowledges that psychological elements of humans have empty, obsessive and insecure aspects. Although such expression may be seen as negative views on reality, it is one phenomenon that lies in the subconsciousness of a subject, according to this study.
