Abstract

This study examines the effects and benefits of to suggest the effects and benefits of grammar teaching using questions from the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) in English reading classes at universities. At most universities, English in liberal arts colleges consists of various listening, speaking, reading, and writing courses. English language learning encourages students to improve their reading abilities and allows them to understand books on their major. In addition, it develops their ability to prepare for an English proficiency test such as TOEIC, which is a prerequisite for employment. At this point, grammar is fundamental and is essential for improving reading comprehension. However, most students feel inadequate regarding their grammar proficiency. In this paper, I suggest a practical or educational approach when teaching grammar using actual TOEIC questions. In particular, teaching questions of parts 5 and 6 from TOEIC enable students to effectively acquire grammatical knowledge. English reading classes’ objective is to improve competence in English and linguistic use in real life. To conduct realistic and effective English education in the EFL context, I suggest that grammar teaching should focus on the necessity of convergent using TOEIC reading questions. Thus, this paper suggests that TOEIC reading questions, including the textbook and other reading materials, be used during reading classes. This approach will effectively improve students’ reading abilities, along with their TOEIC scores.
