초록

This study aims to identify grammar categories within TOEIC Part 5 by analyzing and classifying grammar-related questions. While previous research has suggested that Korean university students struggle with the reading comprehension (RC) section due to limited grammar knowledge, official data from ETS is unavailable, creating a gap in test-taker insights. To determine the grammar categories in TOEIC Part 5, we examined 29 sets of 870 questions from previous TOEIC exams published by YBM Korea. We applied the language format recommended by the 2022 Ministry of Education’s revised English curriculum and the English Grammar Profile (EGP) of CEFR. Findings indicate that TOEIC Part 5 mainly comprises grammar-related questions, while a smaller portion deals with vocabulary. Among the grammar questions, a significant proportion aligns with the Ministry of Education's language form guideline, and the majority also match CEFR's EGP criteria. We categorized these questions into 10 integrated categories, such as Nouns, Adjectives, Adverbs, Prepositions, Clauses/Conjunctions/Reported speech, Determiners/Pronouns, Tense, Passives, to-Infinitives, and Modals. These results suggest that TOEIC grammar questions closely align with standard English learning grammar categories, and it is expected that it will help potential test-takers learn.
