Abstract
This study aims to explore early childhood teachers’ perceptions of Play-Based Early Childhood Curriculum through image analysis, focusing on Large and Small Group Activities. The purpose is to identify different types of images related to these activities and examine their meanings within the context of the play-based curriculum. Data were collected from 197 early childhood teachers in public and private kindergartens located in B City, South Korea, using a questionnaire including both image and written descriptions. The analysis revealed 8 image types: play-based, interaction-driven, flexibility-seeking, structured preference, sociality development, individualizationseeking, integrated approach, and experience-oriented. The play-based and flexibility -seeking types emphasized the teacher’s role in fostering voluntary play participation, while interaction-driven and sociality development types highlighted the significance of peer interaction and cooperation for holistic development. The structured preference and integrated approach types stressed the systematic integration of learning goals with play, while experience-oriented and individualization-seeking types focused on providing support based on individual children’s characteristics. This study suggests that effective implementation of the Play-Based Early Childhood Curriculum requires practical support measures and policy improvements that integrate the strengths of all eight image types in a balanced manner.
