이 연구는 최근 급속히 증가하는 일본인의 반중감정을 주목하여 반중감정이 어떻게 증가하고 왜 증가하는가를 밝히고자 하였다. 반중감정의 요인을 Pew Research Center의 여론조사자료를 통해 검증한 결과 통계적으로 유의한 영향을 미치는 요인은 중국 요인으로 경제성장, 군사력 증강, 정치적 영향력 순서의 크기로 영향을 미친다. 중국 요인에 비해 일본 요인은 반중감정에 거의 영향을 끼치지 못하는데 일본의 경제적 침체, 일본 우익 정치인들의 정치적 동원, 일본 문화의 우월성 에 대한 인식 등은 아무런 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 이 결과는 일본인의 반중감정은 중국의 부상이라고 하는 대외 환경에 대한 반응이며 신시참배, 교과서 수정, 평화헌법 개정으로 나타나는 일본사회의 우경화와 직접적으로 관계가 없다는 것을 보여 준다고 하겠다. 반중감정의 경험적 분석을 통해 일중관계의 미래를 전망하면 일중관계는 단기적으로는 갈등과 대립의 관계가 지속되겠지만 중장기적으로는 정냉경열과 같이 경쟁과 협력이 병존하는 관계로 변화할 것으로 보인다.
Abstract
This study tries to explain causes for increasing anti-chinese feelings among the Japanese public. Statistical analyses of Pew Research Center’s global attitude survey data in 2011 show that anti-Chinese feelings of the Japanese people are greatly affected by the rise of China, specifically her economic growth, increasing military capability and growing political influence. On the other hand, a recent conservative shift of the Japanese society brought about by economic depression, cultural superiority, and right wing mobilization show little significant effects on anti-Chinese feelings. Due to the heightened nationalistic popular feelings toward each other, the China-Japan relation is likely to remain strained at least in the forseeable future as leadership of both countries is either unwilling or unable to soothe anger and distrust of their own people.
