이 글은 중국 당국에 의한 일본에 대한 적대적 역사의 활용 동학을 검토하였다. 중국 공식매체를 통해 청일전쟁과 중일전쟁의 기억이 강화되는 현상은 영유권, 역사 문제상의 갈등으로 인한 국내 민족주의 감정의 발로로 이해되기도 하고, 국내정치과정에 의해 일어난 것으로도 상정될 수 있다. 이 글에서는 『인민일보』에서 청일, 중일전쟁을 다루는 기사들의 추이를기초로 중국 당국의 역사적 활용추세를 구하고, 그 확대 추이가 일본발 외부 요인에 의해 설명되는지, 중국 정치의 권력 강화 국면으로 설명되는지를 실증적으로 검토하였다. 그 결과는 두 요인이 결합되었을 때에 적대적 대일 기억의 전략적 활용이 현저하게 나타났음을 보여주며, 내부적 국내 정치 요인은 적대적 대일 기억의 활용이 줄어들기 어렵게 한다는 점과 외부적 일본 요인은 적대적 대일 기억의 강화와 직접적 관련성이 작다는 점을 제시한다. 여론에 대한 정치적 민감성과 민족주의 여론 모두가 확대되었을 때, 일본에 대한 적대적 역사 문제가 중국 당국에 의해 적극적으로 취급되는 것이다.
Abstract
This article examines the strategic use of hostile memories of Japan by Chinese authorities. The emergence of memories of the past war with Japan through the Chinese official media may be regarded as an expression of domestic nationalism as a result of conflict with Japan, and it can also be assumed to have been caused by the domestic political process. I examine whether the expansion of articles covering two Sino-Japanese wars in the “People’s Daily” could be explained by external factors of Japan’s behaviors and internal factors of unique political processes in China. The result shows that when both factors are combined, the strategic use of hostile memory is significantly increased. This means that when both the political sensitivity to public opinion and nationalist public opinion are expanded, the hostile history issue against Japan is actively handled by Chinese authorities.
