Abstract

This study analyzes culture-related vocabulary extracted from three works—Memories of Matsuko, Run with the Wind, and The Eccentric Family—by comparing the Japanese-to-Korean translation results produced by Papago, DeepL, and ChatGPT with human translations. The analysis revealed four key issues associated with machine translation and generative AI, based on both mistranslation analysis and translation tone analysis. First, there is a tendency to overly rely on literal translations of phonetic transcriptions, Chinese character readings, and the meanings of Chinese characters. Second, machine translation struggles to address context dependency and polysemy. Third, it became evident that complying with loanword notation conventions and achieving cultural reproduction present considerable challenges. Fourth, instances of omitted words, untranslated terms, and misrecognition of word structures were found to hinder accurate meaning transmission. In light of these challenges, the effective use of translation systems in cultural translation requires complementary processing by human translators—both pre-editing and post-editing. In terms of pre-editing, two key measures are necessary: first, supplementing the readings of proper nouns; second, identifying culture-related vocabulary likely to cause mistranslations or unnatural translation tone in advance. In terms of post-editing, three main points should be emphasized: Verifying the appropriateness of the transliterated terms; ensuring the correct selection of meaning within context; and fine-tuning the translated text as a whole to ensure accuracy and naturalness.
