Abstract

This study investigated the effects of Web-based cooperative learning strategies on pre-service teachers’ social presence and academic achievement. In this study, Web-based cooperative learning strategies were utilized with positive interdependence and group processing as the essential components of cooperative learning. In addition, the pre-service teachers’ social presence was measured by the overall scores of ‘the Test of Social Presence’ and the four components of social presence: 1) social context, 2) online communication, 3) interactivity, and 4) privacy. 68 pre-service teachers enrolled in University C in Seoul participated in online cooperative learning activities. All participants were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: positive interdependence, group processing, and positive interdependence-plus-group processing. The “positive interdependence” and the “group processing” groups received single, associated skills training. The “positive interdependence-plus-group processing” groups received combined, associated skills training. The results indicated that there was no significant difference among any of the three treatment groups with respect to the overall scores of “the Test of Social Presence” and the four components of social presence. They also indicated that there were significant differences among pre-service teachers in the three treatment groups with respect to their achievement scores. Specifically, pre-service teachers in the “group processing” groups had significantly higher achievement than those in the “positive interdependence” groups.
