Abstract

This study was conducted to examine whether the learning presence predicts interactions among students and their academic achievement in a web-based problem based learning (PBL) environment. The researchers exposed students from a number of education programs to a web-based problem based learning environment for a month, and measured their perceived learning presence, interactions and academic achievement. Correlational and multiple regression analysis were employed to determine the relationships among these variables. The findings indicated that the level of perceived social presence affected the way students interact and their team academic achievement in the web-based PBL environment. Findings also revealed that students' learning presence affected student's individual academic achievement but did not make any significant prediction to the team academic achievement nor the way students interact. In contrast to the findings of previous studies, the cognitive presence did not predicted the interactions among students and the students' academic achievement in the web-based PBL. The results of this study supported the importance of establishing learning environments where students can actively interact and feel social and emotional presence to ensure higher academic achievement in the web-based PBL environment. Further studies using diverse web-based PBL contexts were suggested to provide more accurate predictability of the learning presence on interactions among students and students' academic achievement.
