정치참여와 민주주의 지지 성향 -정치참여 경험을 한 청소년들의 정치 신뢰가 하락하는 문제를 어떻게 해석할 것인가?-

본 연구는 정치참여가 사회의 민주주의 발전에 어떻게 기여할 수 있는가에 대한 경험적인 논의가 그동안 부족했다는 문제의식에서 시작하여, 다음과 같은 연구 문제들을 설정하였다. 첫째, 민주주의 발전에 있어 핵심적인 민주주의 지지의 유형은 무엇인가? 둘째, 정치참여와 민주주의 지지 성향 사이의 관계는 어떠한가? 셋째, 민주주의 발전에 핵심적인 지지의 유형과 긍정적 관계에 있는 개인적 요인들은 무엇인가? 이에 답하기 위해 본 연구는 정치참여와 정치발전 사이의 관계를 다룬 이론들을 고찰하였고, 이를 경험적으로 검증하기 위해 민주주의의 지지 개념을 원칙 차원과 현실 차원으로 나누어서 정치참여와의 관계에 대한 분석을 실시하였다. 이에 대한 본 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 민주주의 체제 선호가 민주주의 발전에 핵심적이다. 둘째, 정치참여 경향이 강할수록 이상적 차원의 민주주의를 지지하는 경향이 있다. 현실적 차원의 민주주의 지지에 있어서는 투표 참여와는 긍정적인 관계가 나타났지만, 비제도적 정치참여와는 부정적인 관계에 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이에 따르면 투표가 아닌 정치참여 경험을 한 청소년들이 정치적 신뢰는 하락했을지라도 민주적 이상에 대한 추구는 강해졌을 가능성을 시사한다. 셋째, 민주주의 체제 선호에는 정치참여, 정치적 관심, 사회적 신뢰, 탈물질주의 경향, 교육수준 등이 유의미하고 긍정적인 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다.

Abstract

This study studies the lack of empirical discussions on how political participation can contribute to the development of democracy in society, and sets the following research questions. First, what is the type of democratic support that is core to the development of democracy? Second, what is the relationship between political participation and democratic support? Third, what are the personal factors that are positively related to the core type of democratic support? To answer these, this study examined theories that dealt with the relationship between political participation and political development. To verify this empirically, the concept of democratic support was divided into a principle and a practical dimension, and the relationship to political participation was analyzed. The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, preference for a democratic system is key to the development of democracy. Second, the stronger the political participation, the more likely one is to support principle dimensions of democracy. Democratic support in practical dimensions has a positive relationship with voting, but a negative relationship with non-institutional political participation. According to this, it is possible that youths who have experienced political participation rather than voting may have strengthened their pursuit of democratic ideals even though their political trust fell. Third, political participation, political interest, social trust, post-materialism, and education each had a significant and positive effect on the preference for a democratic system.
