정치참여와 단체참여가 민주주의 지지에 미치는 영향: 한국과 대만을 중심으로

초록

민주주의 국가의 시민들은 민주주의 기본원리를 실현할 수 있는 제도가 마련되고 그러한 제도를 통해 시민의 의사가 반영되어야 민주주의를 지지하게 된다. 본 연구는 주권재민원리를 실천하는 정치참여와 단체참여에 초점을 두고 한국과 대만을 중심으로 시민들의 정치참여와 단체참여가 민주주의 지지에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 탐색한다. 분석결과에 따르면 한국과 대만의 민주주의 지지 수준은 높게 나타났다. 한국은 ‘지역문제를 해결하기 위한 모임’, 대만은 ‘선거’ 정치참여가 민주주의 지지에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 또한 한국은 ‘시위나 항의 집회’ 정치참여가, 대만은 ‘이차 단체참여’가 민주주의 지지에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다.

Abstract

In democratic countries, citizens will support democracy when the government establishes an institution to realize principles of democracy and their opinions are represented via the institution. Along with an assumption that the principle of popular sovereignty is realized through political participation and association engagement, this study explores the extent to which political participation and association engagement influence the levels of support for democracy in two countries. The research findings show that there are some differences in the effects of political participation and association engagement between South Korea and Taiwan in spite of the high levels of support for democracy in both countries. Whereas the experience of involvement in local problem solving has a positive relationship to support for democracy in South Korea, voting has a positive relationship to support for democracy in Taiwan. Conversely, the levels of support for democracy are found to be negatively associated with the experience of attending a demonstration or protest march in South Korea, and negatively associated with the level of involvement in second social network groups in Taiwan.
