학교교육 정상화를 위한 2008학년도 대학입학전형제도 개선방안이 마련됨에 따라 시험성적 위주의 선발방법을 지양하고 대학별 다양한 학생선발방법을 개발할 필요성이 제기되고 있다. 이를 위해서는 대학별 학생선발과 관련된 변수들에 대한 체계적 연구가 필요하지만 우리나라에서는 이에 관한 이론적 연구나 통계적 분석기법이 미흡한 실정이다. 우리 대학들의 학생선발 모형개발에 시사점을 제시할 수 있도록 이와 관련한 미국에서의 연구 동향 및 분석기법을 소개하고 중서부 지역에 위치하고 있는 아이오와 주립대학을 연구 대상으로 하여 입학허가 결정에 영향을 미치는 주요 변수들을 분석하고자 한다. 본 연구에서 제시되는 통계적 기법 및 검증방법들은 교육 분야 연구에서는 비교적 활용되지 않았던 방법들로 향후 연구에 보다 적극적으로 활용될 것을 기대한다.
Abstract
A study of the factors influencing American state university admissionHan, seogsoo(Kongju National University)The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors affecting the state university admission process. In order to achieve the purpose, this study used the logistic regression analysis and examined many variables which were likely to be related to the admissions decision. Clusters of factors were 1) personal and demographic variables, 2) educational characteristics variables, and 3) college preferences variables.The data used in this study were obtained from the student files and admissions data provided by the study institution, and Student Profile Questionnaire information of the ACT. The entering cohorts such as 1998 and 1999 were used. The data of 1999 were used as the developmental sample to estimate the statistical models whereas the data of 1998 did as the validation sample to test the accuracy of the models. This study is ultimately expected to help Korean universities develop their own admission models according to the new college admission policy which Korean government proposed in 2004. The statistical techniques used in this study may accelerate the statistical analyses of many educational issues in Korea.Major factors affecting college admissions were family income, parents' educational level, admission index score, high school size, application date, etc. Another important finding was the necessity of BIC test from the viewpoint of statistics. Many variables failed to pass the BIC test even though statistically significant in Wald test. Therefore, it would be useful to apply BIC test and then exclude the variables that have negative statistics.
