초록

역사적으로 여러 매체의 개념과 이론이 등장하였지만, 교육공학계에서 이에 대한 탐구는 미약한 실정이다. 본 연구는 그 동안 등장한 여러 매체의 개념과 그 변천을 설명하고 그 교육적 시사점을 탐구하는 데 목적이 있다. 따라서 문헌분석 방법을 통해 학자와 철학자들이 제시한 매체 개념의 개념을 연대기적으로 설명하고 정리하였다. 초기 매체의 개념은 대상을 중재하거나 전달하는 중간을 의미하였다. 플라톤은 매체의 본질에 회의적이었고 동시에 구어에 대한 우려를 나타냈다. 아리스토텔레스는 ‘모방’이라는 측면에서 매체의 특성을 파악하였다. 그 후 이미지와 문자성에 대한 비교와 성찰이 이루어졌으며, 이와 함께 ‘매체성’에 대한 관심과 연구가 이루어졌다. 구술성과 문자성은 오랫동안 논쟁의 핵심을 이루었으며, Marshall McLuhan, Harold A. Innis, Eric A. Havelock, Jack Goody, Walter J. Ong 등으로 대표되는 캐나다 학파는 매체가 ‘언제나 이미’ 일상생활에서 정보, 지식, 경험의 생산과 유통을 가능하게 하고 환경을 조건지운다는 ‘매체 선험성’에 대한 관점을 처음 밝혔다. Walter Benjamin은 사진에 대한 관조와 분석을 통하여 근대 기술을 이용한 복제와 매체의 활용능력에 관한 업적을 파악하였고, Vilém Flusser, Friedrich Kittler 및 Marshall McLuhan은 매체는 단순한 정보 전달 도구를 넘어 학습자와 세상을 연결하고, 지식의 전달 및 구성을 지원하는 중요한 중재자로서 기능한다는 입장을 제시하였다. 매체 개념의 역사는 매체가 학습자의 인식과 사고를 형성하고 확장시키며, 학습자와 교육 현장을 연결하는 핵심 도구로 작용하고 있음을 시사한다. 따라서 최근 제시되는 매체 개념들은 매체환경으로써 새로운 교수학습모델 개발의 가능성을 열어주고 있다. 본 연구는 매체와 불가분의 관계에 있는 학계가 매체에 대한 이해와 그 철학적 기반을 다지기 위하여 역사적으로 나타난 매체의 개념과 이에 파생되는 기능, 역할, 영향 등을 개괄하고 그 교육공학적 함의를 제공하고자 한다.

Abstract

Historically, various media concepts and theories have emerged, but their exploration in the context of educational technology is still lacking. This study aims to elucidate the media concepts that have emerged over time and discuss their implications for education. A literature analysis approach is used to chronologically examine and organize the concepts of media as presented by scholars and philosophers. The original concept of media referred to an intermediary that transmits or conveys a subject. Plato, however, was skeptical of its essence and voiced concerns about oral communication. Aristotle examined the characteristics of media through the concept of imitation. This was followed by comparisons and reflections on imagery and literacy, which sparked increasing interest and research into the nature of mediality. The dichotomy between orality and literacy has been a longstanding subject of scholarly contention. The Canadian school, represented by scholars such as Marshall McLuhan, Harold A. Innis, Eric A. Havelock, Jack Goody, and Walter J. Ong, introduced the concept of media a priori. They argued that media inherently enable the production and dissemination of information, knowledge, and experience in everyday life, thus shaping and conditioning the environment. Walter Benjamin examined the advancements of modern technology in replication, particularly through his contemplation and analysis of photography. Vilém Flusser, Friedrich Kittler, and Marshall McLuhan contended that media function not only as tools for transmitting information but also as key mediators that connect learners with the world, supporting both the delivery and construction of knowledge. The historical evolution of media concepts underscores their pivotal role as transformative tools that shape and expand learners' perceptions and cognitive processes while simultaneously connecting them to educational contexts. Consequently, contemporary conceptualizations of media unlock possibilities for developing innovative teaching and learning models in media-rich environments. This study provides a comprehensive overview of historically important media concepts, their multifaceted functions, roles, and impacts, providing educational insights as a stepping stone for academia to refine its understanding of media and its philosophical underpinnings.
