Abstract
With advances in digital-twin technology, structural health monitoring (SHM) for naval ships is gaining attention as a key enabler of readiness. A core objective of a naval-ship digital twin is to ensure structural safety by estimating responses at uninstrumented locations in real time from limited sensor data. Fatigue failure is particularly critical, requiring tri-axial stress information, whereas conventional long-base strain gauges (LBSGs) provide only uniaxial longitudinal strain. This study presents a method to predict tri-axial stresses at hotspot locations using only uniaxial LBSG data. A transformation matrix is constructed based on a mode-superposition concept (modal-amplitude consistency), and the approach is validated by comparison with finite-element analysis (FEA) results, demonstrating its applicability to a naval ship hull digital twin model.
