Abstract
We investigated the effects of diverse exercise intensities on levels of MDA, SOD, GPx, and TNF-α in human plasma. Twelve volunteers participated in the exercise program which consisted of four intensities [40, 60, 80, and 100% of heart rate reserve(HRR)] on the treadmill and resting conditions. To determine whether levels of MDA, SOD, GPx, and TNF-α are dependent on exercise intensity, we used commercial assay kits, respectively using isolated human plasma, collected immediately after exercise. As exercise intensity increases, the levels of MDA(p<.05) and SOD(p<.05) decreased to 60% HRR and 80% HRR respectively, and then continuously increased to 100% HRR. In addition, GPx level increased in proportion to the exercise intensity (p<.05), whereas TNF-α level was not changed significantly. In conclusion, the exercise-induced changes of MDA, SOD, and GPx levels in human plasma appears to be attributed to the physiological adaptation to lower exercise intensity and increased oxidative stress as a consequence of higher oxygen consumption.
