Abstract

The effect of submaximal exercises with different intensities on the blood lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes activities. Exercise Science, 13(4): 413-422, 2004. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of various exercise intensities on the change of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes activities. 7 healthy young males(age : 25.6±1.5, O2max: 56.0±2.7 ml/kg/min) participated in four trials. At each trial., subjects ran on the treadmill at the respective intensities corresponding to 50%, 65%, 75% and 85% of O2max. They exercised for different duration so that energy expenditure(400kcal) was equal to all subjects. The order of the trials was randomized and separated by one week. Blood was obtained at rest, immediately after exercise, and at 90 min after exercise to measure the serum malondialdehyde(MDA) level, erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase(GPx) and superoxide dismutase(SOD) activities. serum MDA level was increased significantly immediately after exercise(p<.05) and recovered at 90 min after exercise(p<.01). Erythrocyte SOD activity decreased immediately after exercise in comparison to baseline(p<.05) and increased just a little at 90min after exercise but appeared lower activity than at rest(p<.05). Erythrocyte GPx activity did not significantly change throughout every time. Therefore, The results of this study suggest that submaximal exercise, which expend on 400kcal, induced the oxidative stress of the blood independent of exercise intensity but recovered into rest level within 90 minutes. And the exercise of this type does not stimulate activity of erythrocyte antioxidant enzymes
