Abstract

In this study, the positions of L1 and L2 points were calculated among five Lagrange points of the restricted three bodies problem by applying a simple approximation to the uniform circular motion learned in Physics 2. The Lagrange L2 point is the center point at which the James Webb Space Telescope is currently sent to observe the universe and moves in a halo orbit, and the L1 point is the point where the SOHO(Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) satellite was sent. The positions of the Lagrange points L1 and L2 obtained by the formula and simple Web VPython programs were both calculated to be about 1.5 million km and were in good agreements with each other. This content can be used as a good teaching and learning material to learn the use of the Lagrange points in the restricted three-bodies problem and the reasons why the positions of the space telescopes are determined as L1 and L2. It can also be used as an exercise to apply programming such as Web VPython.
