Abstract
Three kinds of school experiments have been developed using slow diffusion in a hydrogel and color change of indicators in the acid-base reaction. The counter ion in the solution diffused into a hydrogel containing an ion and indicator. The diffusion distance increased as a function of the ion concentration and diffusion rate decreased as the diffusion proceeded. Fick’s law was simply visualized through these phenomena. In the experiment exchanging acid and base in the medium, it has been demonstrated that hydrogen ion diffused fast than hydroxide ion, which indicates that hydrodynamic radius of hydrogen ion is smaller than that of hydroxide ion. In addition, a color change of various indicators was spatially visualized in a hydrogel, which is beneficial to understand continuous color change of indicators.
