신체 어휘 관용어의 언어 보편성 한·영 손 관용어의 비유 의미를 중심으로

이 논문은 한국어와 영어의 신체 어휘로 이루어진 관용어 가운데 특히 손 관련 관용어를 비교, 분석하여 그것에 나타난 비유 의미의 보편성 문제를 논의해 보려는 것이다. 인간의 신체적인 특질이나 신체 활동으로부터 형성된 개념들이 언어에 투영되기 때문에 신체 관련 어휘는 어떤 언어에서든 보편적으로 존재하며 또한 기본적인 어휘로 널리 사용되고 있다. 그 가운데 대표적인 것이 손 관련 관용어인데 그것은 손이 쓰임새에 따라 다양하게 개념화 되면서 언어 형태로 표출되었기 때문이다. 일반적으로 문화의 영향을 받게 되는 관용어는 개별언어에 따라 서로 다른 양상을 띠는 것이 일반적이지만 이 논문에서 분석해 본 결과, 손 관련 관용어는 의외로 유사한 양상을 띠고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 관용어가 사회문화적 환경 속에서 개념화를 통하여 생겨나는 것이므로 상이한 두 문화권의 거리를 생각한다면 한국어와 영어의 손 관련 관용어는 상당한 차이를 보여야 한다. 그러나 두 언어의 손 관련 관용어가 유사한 양상을 띠고 있는 것은 한국어와 영어 사용자들의 손과 관련된 유사한 경험으로 인하여 공통된 개념화가 이루어지고 그것이 각각의 언어에 투영되었기 때문이라고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine how common or different the figurative meanings of body term ‘hand’ are in English and Korean idioms. The result of this study is as follows. First, the body term ‘hand’ has been conceptualized as a container, which results in the metaphorical concept [THE HAND IS A CONTAINER]. Second, the body term ‘hand’ is usually used to metonymically refer to entities and substances. For example, ‘hand’ is usually used to stand for ‘activity’ on the ground of the metonymical concept [THE HAND STANDS FOR THE ACTIVITY]. Third, the body ‘hand’ is also used to refer to the whole person, such as ‘This work requires many hands.’ and ‘He worked as a farmhand.’ etc. This expression is to refer to the person with hands on the ground of the metonymic concept [THE PART FOR THE WHOLE]. Lastly, many idiomatic parallels have been found in the English and Korean language despite the fact that two languages are completely different genealogically. These examples show that they have been derived from the common conceptualization of the experiences that the users of languages came to have through their body activities.
