Abstract
Children’s Academic Achievement Based on Mothers’ Employment and Mothers’ Education Levels Kim, Ilhyuk(Korean Educational Development Institute)Research shows that mothers’ incumbent employment status has negative impact on their children’s academic achievement. In Korea, little research has examined the relationship between mothers’ occupational status based on mothers’ education levels and children’s academic achievement, although some studies examined whether or not mothers’ occupational status influences student achievement. Using a national-level dataset, the current study explored the relationship between mothers’ occupational status and children’s academic achievement, considering mothers’ levels of education. For this study, the data that were used for studies on ‘An Analysis of the Level of School Education and Its Actual Condition’ for Korean Elementary, Middle, and High schools,’ respectively, (Kim, Y. et al., 2003, 2004, and 2005) were analyzed based on a multiple regression analysis method. The findings of this study are the following: At the elementary and middle school levels, positive but weak effect on student achievement was found when mothers were not employed regardless of their education levels. In the study, mothers’ education levels were defined as secondary education and post-secondary education including junior college. At the high school level, levels of education influenced student achievement differently. When mothers’ education level was high school graduate or less, mothers who were not employed influenced student achievement positively but weakly. On the other hand, mothers’ employment was not significantly related to student achievement when mothers had post-secondary education including junior college. Some policy implications were discussed.
