Abstract

This study aims to empirically validate the internal credibility of the Korean-style Statement Credibility Assessment Model (K-SCAM), a forensic tool developed to assess the veracity of statements in criminal investigations. Thirty sexual offense cases in which K-SCAM had been applied during actual police investigations were analyzed. Five trained statement analysis experts independently evaluated both the complainant’s and the suspect’s statements using the five core criteria of K-SCAM: objectivity, consistency, coherence, plausibility, and specificity. The results revealed statistically significant differences in the distribution of all five criteria depending on the truthfulness of the statements. Among them, coherence and objectivity emerged as significant predictors of veracity in logistic regression analysis. When three or more criteria were met ‘present’, the likelihood of a truthful statement reached 98.5%, whereas when three or more were absent, the probability of deception reached 97.5%. Furthermore, high inter-rater reliability was confirmed, suggesting that K-SCAM provides structurally stable and reliable assessment criteria. However, the study has several limitations. All analyzed cases were limited to sexual offenses, restricting the generalizability of the findings. In several cases, the evaluation results were unidirectional, underscoring the need for more diverse samples. Additionally, experts noted difficulty in clearly distinguishing between the criteria of plausibility and specificity, suggesting a need for further refinement. The small sample size and imbalance in cell frequencies also limit the generalizability of the statistical inferences. Despite these limitations, this study provides important empirical support for the effectiveness of K-SCAM and offers a foundation for its institutional expansion in criminal investigations.
