Abstract
This study aims to conduct a diachronic analysis of the taedo-based adverbs taedo-handi, taedohi, and taedoe. An examination of usage examples from the 15th to the 19th century reveals that these adverbs primarily functioned as expressions of universal quantificational affirmation. In particular, taedoe, as a representative form of this usage, developed into an adverb of degree through an intermediate construction in the form of “NP taedoe VP.” Among the taedo-based adverbs, taedoe appears most frequently in vernacular Korean letters written in Hangul, and it seems to have undergone a distinctive developmental path. In these letters, taedoe frequently appears in greeting expressions and came to function as a subjective universal quantificational expression. However, due to its frequent use in restricted syntactic contexts and the pragmatic inference that the greeting implies the well-being of “everyone,” the semantic function of subjective universal quantification gradually weakened and became bleached. Eventually, due to the conventional and formulaic nature of Korean letter writing, taedoe in these greeting expressions developed into a discourse marker that contributes to semantic cohesion and coherence within discourse, effectively conveying the speaker’s psychological stance.
