Abstract

By researching on the landscape elements and their characteristics represented in the school songs of 150 elementary schools, 88 middle schools and 67 high schools in Gwangju, this article has achieved the following results. 1) Both natural landscapes (862) and cultural landscapes (21) are shown in these songs, but the number of the former is overwhelmingly high. 2) The appearance frequency of the various natural landscapes is as follows : geographical features (420), weather (151), water (107), sky (97), plants (71), animals (11), soil (5). As their subordinate elements such as mountain (geographical features, 312), light (weather, 89), river (water, 83) and field (geographical features, 74) abundantly appear, we can regard them as important landscape elements of Gwangju. Also to be noted is that the light is its distinctive landscape element among them. 3) Proper nouns (place names) are only connected with the geographical features (mountain, field) and the water (river). 4) Among mountains, Mudeungsan (221), the most important landscape of Gwangju, shows the highest appearance frequency in the school songs. This element also often appears with the sun (31) and the light (44), and makes representative landscape images of Gwangju as ‘the sun risen on Mudeungsan’ or ‘the light flashing on Mudeungsan.’ 5) Among rivers, Gwangjucheon (2) is not shown enough though it flows through the city and Yeongsangang (19) and its other tributaries like Geukrakgang (27) and Hwangryonggang (15) are much more frequently mentioned. 6) Most of fields appear only once and mean the space in front of the school.
