Abstract

This study analyzes the cultural-political implications of contemporary Kazakhstani art in 2010’s within the post-Soviet context, focusing on the international touring exhibition Focus Kazakhstan (2018-2019). Through an art-sociological and post-colonial lens, it examines how the Nazarbayev regime instrumentalized art as a political tool. Key findings reveal that the exhibition ostensibly promoted Kazakh art globally but functioned as a vehicle for authoritarian regime legitimization. Sociopolitical critical messages and experimental minds in artworks—such as Rustam Khalfin’s anti-imperialism and Bakhyt Bubikanova’s feminist critique—were decontextualized and repackaged into state-approved narratives like “fusion of tradition and modernity,” exemplifying culture washing. Curatorial strategies neutralized artistic dissent by excluding dissident artists and sanitizing political content. The orientalist framing of “Post-Nomadic Mind” catered to Western audiences, paradoxically reproducing cultural self-othering despite claims of decolonization.
