본 논문은 최근 비엔날레들이 담론화하고 정치사회적 메시지를 앞세우는 상황에서 비엔날레가 표방하는 정치성이 유효한 지 질문한다. 1990년대 후반부터 비엔날레는 형식적으로는 토론과 출판에 주력하고, 내용적으로는 비가시화된 작가 및 작품들을 가시화하는 담론화 경향을 보여 왔다. 본고는 그러한 경향이 형성된 과정을 간략히 짚어보고, 특히 2010년대 들어 신자유주의 현안에 적극적으로 개입하고 발언하려 했던 몇몇 비엔날레의 사례와 그에 대한 비판을 살펴본다. 그리고 정치화의 원인을 글로벌 큐레이터들의 초가시성에서 찾는 입장과 그와 반대로 큐레이터의 탈신화화만으로는 문제가 해결되지 않는다고 보는 입장을 비교한 후, 많은 비엔날레가 작가들의 단순 호명에 의지해 정치성을 획득하려 함으로써 이데올로기를 확산했음을 지적할 것이다. 그럼에도 여전히 비엔날레는 정교한 정치적 서사를 구축할 수 있는 전시이며 우리가 아직 비엔날레를 충분히 실험하지 않았다는 전제 하에 이런 상황을 쇄신할 가능성을 모색할 것이다.
Abstract
Given the recent tendency of biennials to be discursive and put forward politico-social messages, this paper asks whether the politics of biennials is valid. This paper provides a brief genealogy of the discursivity of biennials since the late 1990s to focus on debate and publication in form and to make invisible artists visible in content. Particularly in the 2010s, biennials that actively intervene and speak out on the issues of neo-liberalism have also emerged, and this paper examines the criticism of curators' failure to address the contradictory situation or their ambiguous attitude. After comparing the position accusing global curators’ hyper-visibility with the standpoint that their de-mythologization is not the solution, I will point out that the problem is that many biennials have proliferated ideologies by relying on the simple appellation of artists to gain political power. However, it will explore the possibility of renewing this situation on the premise that biennials are capable of constructing nouveau political narratives and that we have not yet experimented enough with them.
